We often make New Years Resolutions at the start of the year - maybe to workout more, eat healthier, read more, etc. But what about some ideas for healthier habits we can work on with our pets? In this blog we will discuss some ideas on how you can create new healthy routines and goals with and for your pet.
Creating a Consistent Daily Routine
Having time off or going on a vacation can be relaxing and rejuvenating, however, there is something to be said about getting back into a routine. Like us humans, establishing a consistent routine is vital for your pet’s overall well-being. Predictable schedules for feeding, exercise, playtime, and rest help reduce anxiety and promote good behavior. Regular feeding times support healthy digestion and metabolism, while scheduled exercise keeps your pet physically fit and mentally stimulated (American Kennel Club).
Admittedly, when I first adopted my dog, I had no idea what I was doing! Our walks and playtimes were random, and she always seemed unsettled, unsure of what was coming next. A trainer suggested she might need structure to feel secure, so I started small - teaching her that couch time meant relaxing, not running around. It helped, but she was still restless. After doing some research and talking with other dog owners, I decided to try a consistent schedule. I stuck to regular exercise times and worked hard to meet her physical needs. The change was remarkable - Oreo quickly adjusted to the routine, her behavior improved, and she finally settled down indoors. Four years later, we still follow a schedule. It shifts slightly with the seasons, but Oreo knows she can count on it, and that predictability makes all the difference!

Decluttering and Refreshing Pet Supplies
Another idea for a New Pet routine for 2025 is to regularly assess and update your pet’s supplies to ensure they have safe and appropriate items. To get started, consider the following:
Toys: Discard damaged toys that could pose a choking hazard and introduce new ones to keep playtime engaging.
Bedding: Wash bedding regularly and replace it when it becomes worn to maintain a clean and comfortable resting area.
Food and Water Bowls: Ensure bowls are clean and appropriately sized; consider replacing plastic bowls with stainless steel or ceramic to reduce bacterial buildup.
Leashes and Collars: Check for wear and tear and ensure they fit properly to keep your pet safe during outings.
Donating gently used items in good condition to local shelters, such as Loudoun County Animal Services, can benefit other animals in need.
Prioritizing Preventative Healthcare
Preventative healthcare is essential to keep your pet healthy and catch potential issues early. Key components include:
Regular Veterinary Check-Ups: Annual exams help monitor your pet’s health and catch problems before they escalate.
Vaccinations: Keeping vaccinations up to date protects your pet from preventable diseases. Your veterinarian can guide you on the best schedule.
Dental Care: Regular cleanings and at-home dental hygiene can prevent periodontal disease, which can lead to other health issues.
Parasite Prevention: Year-round prevention for fleas, ticks and heartworm is crucial. Your veterinarian can recommend the right products based on your pet’s needs.
